I decided to read My Cousin Rachel entirely on a whim, and also because Natalie at Coffee and a Book Chick told me to. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, "My cousin Rachel" (1952) was directed by Henry Koster and stars Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton. Somehow I have been a little disappointed by some recent reads, but not this time. The Gothic suspense is filled with sexual tension and ambiguity. In My Cousin Rachel, Philip Ashley is laden with guilt and doubt as he remembers his mysterious cousin Rachel. My Cousin Rachel commences with the mouldering corpse of a murderer swinging from a gibbet and although, I don't think I would call it cheerful, I would certainly call it brilliant. This is a wonderful book, and how happy I am to be able to say so. ISBN: 9781402217098 | 394 pages | 10 Mb. Like so many people who have read this book and have never been able to forget it, I was instantly captivated by Daphne Du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel (published in July of 1951) from the first time I read it as a teenager. Philip, the protagonist of My Cousin Rachel, has been raised by his bachelor cousin Ambrose. The Gate's production of Daphne du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel delivers on the promises of its poster. Philip was an orphan from a very early age and grew up under the care of his cousin Ambrose.
